Canada is Now the 3rd Most Popular Destination with International Students

Canada is now ranked as the world’s third-leading destination of international students, behind the United States of America and Australia, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data.

In the last decade alone, the number of international students in Canada has tripled to 642,000, growing 13 per cent last year. In addition, Canada is now positioned ahead of China and the United Kingdom who host an average of 500,000 international students.

What is the Appeal?

The growth in international students is thought to be due to the country’s strong quality of education, as well as its reputation as a multicultural and tolerant society, according to the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE).

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which measures 15-year-old students’ reading, mathematics and science literacy, ranked Canada as 8th in their worldwide study.

A research study by CBIE found 60 per cent of international students to be interested in becoming permanent residents of Canada after their studies.

Consequently, the Canadian government have estimated that foreign students have injected $22 billion annually into the country’s economy.

There are so many highly rated universities in Canada for foreign students. Ontario is by far the largest beneficiary of foreign students in Canada. Last year, it hosted some 48 per cent of Canada’s international student population—nearly 307,000 people.

Chinese Students in Canada

It is estimated that around one-third of Canada’s international student population are Chinese students, with conservative estimates showing that they are injecting around $5 billion into the Canadian economy every year.

Similarly, Chinese students contribute to more than 10 per cent of all revenue at a number of universities in UK. Education services are now Canada’s largest export to China, behind only commodities.

Chinese students make up nearly two-thirds of the international student body at the University of Toronto, more than one-third at the University of British Columbia, and almost one-fourth at McGill University.

There are approximately 50,000 Chinese students attending public high schools, colleges and private language institutions in British Columbia alone.
