Are European tours worth the price?

First off I''l start by saying that I'm 25, planning a 3 month trip to Europe from June until August. I'm travelling by myself and plan to stay at backpackers etc.
Im considering doing a 27 day topdeck tour around Europe when I arrive but am completely unsure what to expect from this trip. The travel agent is really trying hard to sell this tour to me but I want some feedback and advice from people who have done it. Are topdeck or contiki tours worth it at all?
It seems like an awful amount of money to spend when you work out what you pay per day (180 nzd). So I want to know whether these contiki / tour trips are worth the money. Advantages and disadvantages of people who have been. Is there any difference between topdeck and contiki? Do the positives outweigh negatives and is it worth the money?
I do not trust the reviews on the tour sites because all of them are 5 stars and results seem skewed...
