Is is better to take a backpack or suitcase with wheels to summer camp?
Quote from vicky_02 on November 1, 2024, 10:18 pmI've been thinking about packing...
I need to buy some luggage - would any past counsellors recommend a backpack or a suitcase with wheels.
What do most people take?

Quote from gabi on November 1, 2024, 11:33 pmI used a suitcase. You can fit more things into suitcases compared to a backpack. You will be surprised at how much stuff you require for camp! While in the USA, I can guarantee you, that you will come home with way more clothes compared to when you left for camp.

Quote from Jess_xoxo on November 3, 2024, 9:09 amI went to Gap the day my camp ended and got a small extra bag to carry my purchases in. I hardly even noticed I was carrying it round with me cos I put it as checked luggage on train trips etc. Personally, 2 full sized suitcases however, would just get on my nerves Also, I'm better off for knowing what I need to pack this time so I won't be carrying unnecessary stuff.

Oh I guess that would be good for if you were doing city travelling after camp, as opposed to overland tours, when you have limited luggage space!! I did a camping tour with Trek America and so took a big backpack which I think was the better option.

Close to the time you will be sent lots of information. In the Camp America Handbook there will be a suggested packing list. The camp that you get placed in will also send you a packing list with what you will need to bring with you to camp and that might help you to decide
Also I wouldn't overload with toiletries. You will be able to pick up anything you need at Walmart (and it's cheap 😀 ) while you are in the US.
Sunscreen would be on my list.

Quote from mel3961 on November 19, 2024, 4:10 pmI went to camp last year, and traveled around the States afterwards. Me and the friends i traveled with all had packs and wanted to burn them by the end of our trip...they are SO annoying to pack/unpack and find stuff in. I'm going back to camp next year and will definitely take a giant suitcase instead! yeah, packs are easier to carry around but to be honest, the only carrying we did was to and from taxis on our way to airports and train stations etc. your luggage stays wherever you do (hostels, motels etc!) plus yeah, you will gain soooo many new clothes during your trip and our packs were so heavy...take a suitcase!
