Best way to carry valuables????
Quote from CatherineOz on November 15, 2024, 12:31 pmWondering what most people do about their valuables ie: passport, money and credit cards. when out and about. I know you need some money for the day but what is best to do for comfort (piece of mind). Do most carry all of it in a money belt or do they leave them in their suitcase locked up in hostels/on the bus(is this safe?) I dont think I want to have all my valuables on me just incase of pick-pockets. Keep some on me and leave the rest locked in my suitcase.

When I first start travelling solo I had a money belt, which is not as goofy looking as a fanny pack since it goes under the clothes. I got one large enough to hold my passport, money, credit cards, and memory cards while out for the day.
Unfortunately it was slightly bulky in that you could see the outline underneath my shirts sometimes. I am not sure if I would use it so much anymore in lieu of a backpack. Of course, a backpack makes you look like a tourist as well.
Do NOT get a fanny pack. We're not in the 1980s anymore. I'd say try and hide the fact that you are a tourist, but with the cities you will go to, unless you speak their language fluently, you will look like a tourist no matter what.
The difference will be if you look like an easy one to rob or not.

Quote from AussieMitch on November 17, 2024, 3:32 pmI have a money belt and all that kinda stuff. What is more important, if you are going to the beach for the day, and don't want to bring your phone or passport to the beach and if you want to go in the water, who will watch your stuff (if travelling solo)!
When I travel to places where there's a beach, pool or whatever, and I don't want to leave my passport/money in my room or on my towel, I have a waterproof, thin bag that holds my stuff. I bought it at Bushtukah, but I don't know if you have one of those where you are - it's an outdoors shop.
It's like a big Ziploc bag, only much thicker plastic and it wraps over and has velcro. I think kayakers use it (and I used it whitewater rafting in Austria!)
