Do I need a visa to volunteer in the USA?

Can anyone help? I've read contradictory things online some saying yes you do and some saying no?! This is for an unpaid voluntary position and I'm not a US citizen.

The US allows you to volunteer on a tourist visa, if you receive no compensation at all. "Compensation" isn't just money, it is anything of value, such as food and lodging. You can receive food, lodging and some other non-monetary compensation if you volunteer with a charity, with some conditions.
