Do you really need a TEFL certificate to teach abroad?

I am currently planning a trip to South East Asia for next year. I want to stay 3 months but possibly longer and earning money on the way would be grand. I'm a newbie to the idea of teaching, but don't have much experience and I don't have much time to do a certification, so can I still teach? Or for every job do you need one?

There are many teaching opportunities for native speaking Brits/Americans.... I've taught in Seoul, Korea. Some countries like Korea, Japan and China require a degree but not all require TEFL certificates... Personally I would just apply for jobs without a TEFL certificate first before you spend a dime! Get a feel for the ESL abroad market and you might get some job offers. Most important, decide where you want to teach first and get the TEFL certificate after if the school even requires it. Here's a good place to start with questions, jobs, school reviews, etc. Best of luck!

Yeah it really depends on the destination, but its better to have one. This also helps you to pick up the basics of teaching and you can learn a lot.
