Guatemala Backpacking Itinerary Advice (7-10 days)
Quote from jwscott03 on February 4, 2025, 8:21 pmHey!
So I'm in the elementary stages of planning an itinerary for a solo backpacking trip to Guatemala (I've done a two-month backpacking trip in Europe, and I'm doing a three month trip in Asia this summer). Unfortunately, I will only have about 7-10 full days. Obviously, I am trying to make the most of my trip and would love to see everything, but I fully understand that a rushed and crammed trip is not an enjoyable one. Any advice on what I should see and what route makes the MOST sense would be greatly appreciated!
I have to see Antigua, and I feel like it's a no-brainer because its close to Guatemala City. After that, I am torn. Should I a) stick to one side of the country and explore in depth Antigua, Lake Atitlan and the areas around it or b) should I do Antigua, skip Lake Atitlan, and make my way over to Semuc Champey, Flores/Tikal?
I have seen some itineraries where people squeeze in Antigua, Atitlan, Chichicastenango, Semuc, Flores, and Tikal but personally, this sounds like too much due to transportation time. I would MUCH rather take my time and soak up the areas I visit. SO, what would YOU recommend? Everyone says the Lake is a must, and all the little towns look so intriguing, but the attraction of the jungle and landscape of Lanquin/Semuc looks amazing! I want to see jungle, interact with locals, do some outdoor activities, but overall want experience Guatemalan culture. With that being said, I'm also a 22 yr/old who enjoys the "backpacking culture" but don't necessarily have to be apart of it 24/7/ Also, logistically, how is getting to and from Flores/Tikal if I am flying in/out of GC? The transportation between destinations is whats freaking me out. I would hate to waste so much time in transit. Are overnight busses a good option/safe?
Anything helps! Thank you so much
