How much money do I need to travel in South America for a year?
Quote from dixi04 on January 11, 2025, 8:24 pmHi Folks!
I am planning to take one year off in September/October and I am saving money. I was thinking to allocate a figure of £30 per day for the whole trip. Totally it works out to be roughly £10,000 for the entire year
I would try to pay the flight out and the insurance with extra money so that I can actually have a decent budget. Visas and vaccinations (if any) are included as well.
Do you think it is doeble guys?
My itinerary is roughly this one: starting out in Cuba, then Mexico, Central America, Venezuela (if the situation in the country improves!), Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile and finishing it all off in Brazil.
I will backpack as much as I can but I do want to do some things such as climbing some volcanoes in Equador, a trekking to Roraima in Venezuela and Ciudad perdida in Colombia, Galapagos Islands, Huyana Potosi climb in Bolivia, amazon cruise and treks in the forest, diving the blue hole in Belize and maybe doing an alternative trek to the Inca trail in Peru. I will take a flight or two when I am there. One to Easter Island and the other one from Cuba to Mexico.
If anyone has ever done such a trip I would be really happy if he could give me some heads-up!
Thanks!

If you've already been to Mexico and Peru, maybe you should concentrate on the slightly less touristed places in those countries, like Guanajuato, Morelia, Patzcuaro, Oaxaca, San Cristobal de las Casa in Mexico. And Chachapoyas/Kuelap, Trujillo and Ayacucho in Peru.
It sounds like you will be able to have a great trip. You should be able to get a good deal for the Galapagos islands if you check around with different travel agencies in Quito, once you arrive in Ecuador.
