Is volunteering in Africa dangerous?

I like the idea of going to work in Africa but it is a bit scary to think about when I've never been there before and haven't travelled by myself. I'm looking at a few volunteer programs which look a bit of a rip off price wise, but its the in-country support and group placements which is gearing me towards this route. But as a single female I'm still a bit cautious so i'm not sure its right/safe for me?!

Like going anywhere (or even in your home country) there are always risks, but generally most people you will meet will be friendly. We would recommend applying for structured program which includes placements, transfers and accommodation. Be sure to buy travel insurance too. You could also choose a country with better safety stats or with better tourism infrastructure. Browse our Africa gap year programs to browse trips.
