Is woofing a scam?

Has anyone got any experiences doing woofing (working on farms like a volunteer exchange)? I was looking for a free way to travel and it seems really popular like the Facebook page has 200,000 likes but to me it just seems a bit of a con? Like you have to work I image hard doing hard labour, for no money but a free place to stay? I don't get it, am I missing something? Shelley

I know what you mean, it does look like a lot of work when for example what would be the price of a hostel dorm bed in the same place? Maybe it is the social aspect though where you can meet new people from all over the world.
