Lifeguard Qualifications for Summer Camp
Quote from ddward on October 29, 2024, 10:26 pmHey there
I had an interview with a camp in MA. and they wanted me to teach music at a camp. and the interview was all good and stuff.
They emailed me 2 days later asking me if i could get my lifeguard qualification. I thought it was a little odd since i have nothing to do with swimming or lifeguarding on my application nor did we talk about it on the 40 min phone interview.
I emailed back and said "no i dont have one, but i'm willing to get one if needed" and they emailed back saying 'sorry we have no jobs for you"
Sooo my question is, to get into a camp, do we need a lifeguard qual? because ive been confused for quite some time now about why didnt hire me :S

There are that many counsellor positions and that many camps, that I can't really comment. I wonder if maybe it was a smaller camp and they were looking at someone that could cover both roles. Just an idea.
You do not need to have a lifeguarding certificate to be placed at camp. For those applicants that are placed on the waterfront - they are usually required to do a 'Red Cross water safety course" while they are at camp.
Hopefully this eases your mind and a placement will be confirmed shortly 🙂
