Travelling to Australia with a dog
Quote from jackie_p on January 12, 2025, 11:51 pmYeah. I know a lot of you will say it's crazy and irresponsible.
But I'm researching in to all possibilities before I decide on anything.
I have a wee terrier dog, and he is my everything. He has been the main thing that is constant in my life that kept my anxiety in check during bad times. He loves going to new places and long car journeys (so far only around Scotland, and he hasn't been on a plane yet).
I was thinking about camping around Australia on a working holiday, staying in the odd pet friendly accommodation if available. I know there are procedures to follow to get through quarantine etc. and large fees.
I would love to share my adventure with him. I get that this might sound a bit silly to some people but he really means that much to me.
And it's a huge thing to ask someone to take care of your dog for a year, everyone already has their own responsibilities without and extra set of paws running around.
Basically this topic is to get opinions, or if any of you have been stuck in this position of leaving your furry friend at home - What did you do?
Do you know of anyone who did travel with their dog to Aus? Was it worth it for the dog and their human?

Quote from mattyb on January 14, 2025, 9:53 pmI think it would be really difficult on your dog to bring him to Australia.
Summers are long and hot, and last year round in the north. Even winter temperatures stick around 25 - 35 degrees C in places like Darwin and far north QLD. The ground will get too hot for your dog to walk on - he's going to need shade and water throughout the day. So if you're imagining walking around all day with your doggo, might not be humane to do so. Similarly, can't say I've looked too extensively, but not sure that you'll be able to find accommodation that will include dog-sitting services to make sure he is cool and watered whilst you're at work. Even living in Melbourne which fairly chill in temperature compared to the rest of the mainland, my doggo needs to be shaved in summer and we always have him chill with us inside, especially at night. No way to tell if yours would even be able to cope with such heat? You also won't be able to bring him in to national parks, which are some of the best things to see in aus. Same goes for public beaches - vast majority are no doggo zones.
