What to do in Brussels for a day with little money

I am traveling alone from England via Belgium to stay with a friend in Maastricht, Holland before we go to a festival in Germany. I will be in Germany for a few days, in Holland for a few days, and will have a a few hourrs to explore Brussels when traveling both ways.

This may sound like a stupid question I really don't know 'what to do'. Particularly while i'm on my own in Brussels, I would like to experience the city but what does this involve. Museums? Pubs? Talking to strangers on the street? Also I'm on a budget do nothing too expensive.

This is my first trip abroad for the sake of traveling, and hopefully there will be many more to follow, but I would be very grateful if people could tell me what exactly they do/did when they visited Brusseks. What is the best way to learn about Brussels or to meet people, how does one pass the time. What would you do if you were due to arrive in Brussels at 9am and had a spare day?

Thanks

It all depends on what you are interested in. Are you interested in museums or would you just prefer to sit and people watch? I've done both and enjoyed both equally. It just depended on my mood. I would suggest doing a combination of the two if you can. I like to spend my mornings checking out museums then have a long lunch with a drink, which allows me to people watch. I then like to spend a little time window shopping or just wandering the streets if I have any extra time before my dinner/travel commitment.

Maybe just find a pub in one of the central squares or check out the EU parliament?

If you only have a limited time, I would do some research in advance and plan out my day before I arrived. I would also give myself multiple options depending on my mood. Some days I'm just not in the mood to check out a history museum but could sit and look at famous paintings all day. I would just suggest reseach, reseach, and more research before your trip and narrow down the possibilities based on your own interests.

Don't go somewhere because all the other tourists go there, go where you are interested, even if that means hanging out in a local park or checking out some live music at a local pub. Some of my best travel memories are of wandering around Prague and finding a local botanical garden and chilling out in a city park in Vienna and taking in a local rock festival with chocolate covered strawberries on a stick.
