Why is volunteering abroad so expensive?

Some of the volunteer programs prices are so expensive, how does anyone afford it? Also shouldn't it be free if you are volunteering?

This really depends on the project and organisation. You can find completely free and paid volunteer jobs, but if you are an unskilled participant wanting to go and help in a different country you might need to pay. This usually includes pre departing information, placements, transfers, food, accommodation, in-country support and some activities. Consider most organisations don't have any funding to keep operational other than donations.
