How You Can Help

You can find volunteer projects in countries all around the world, from India, Nepal, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam to Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Ghana, Tanzania and Kenya – just to name a few.

Orphanage jobs can include helping children with general life skills, including health and sanitation, as well as arts, crafts and music. Depending on your own skills and interests, though, you can also teach songs, music, dance, cooking, or any number of activities, and generally just spend quality time with the children.

As a volunteer you can offer valuable support and education to the children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. You will offer support to the children whilst being a positive role model for the children. You can also become involved in a variety of activities including outdoor activities, helping with their homework and playing with the children.

You might also be able to coach sports, help with outreach and healthcare, or work in fundraising and awareness. The role really depends on the organisation and location.

Some volunteer programs help poor children who are orphans or whose parents have died because of HIV/AIDS. Project’s aim to provide under-privileged children with an opportunity to gain the lifelong gift of education. The basis is the believe that education can break the cycle of poverty so one can take control of one’s own life. Education is a basic human right, as fundamental as food and shelter. It is the key to every child’s development, unlocking their potential and helping them to face the challenges of a changing world.

Some organisations also hire staff to work with disabled children. Volunteers can talk/play with the children, help the physiotherapists when they do the therapies for the children, help feed the children and take them on their wheel chairs for walks.

Is Volunteering in Orphanages Ethical?

There have been cases where unethical orphanages have been operating in countries like Cambodia but there are also lots of really inspirational institutions which offer real hope to improving children’s futures.

Be sure to research all organisations before applying and make sure this is the right type of experience for you. If you have concerns about not having a positive impact you might want to donate to international humanitarian organisations instead or browse similar community based volunteering programs.
