8 Reasons Why Barcelona is the Perfect Digital Nomad Destination

Living the Digital Nomad life ain’t easy – there’s always that stress to find a place that has good internet connection so that you may earn your living while still being able to enjoy the wonders of what each city provides.

Which is also why it’s important to choose places that provide a few essentials. Not every person wants the same thing, but with most Digital Nomads I’ve spoken to, the consensus is that they want a place that has good internet, is cheap enough to live comfortably, a vibrant atmosphere, friendly people and to some, easy access to transportation.

Of course this list might vary depending on the person.

I’ve been a Digital Nomad for over three years now and i’ve lived in different cities in Asia, North and South America and in Europe. Out of all these places, while there have been many cities that I love (I’m talking to you Buenos Aires and Berlin), I always seem to find myself returning to Barcelona.

There is just something about Barcelona that always pulls me back in. Let me break it down for you as to why Barcelona is a perfect digital nomad destination:

1. It’s a Hub

I love making friends with the locals everywhere I go, but at the same time I also love mixing with people doing the same thing as I do – or somewhere near abouts.

In Barcelona, you’re guaranteed to find at least one other person who will be able to relate to your struggle (or joy). It is a hub for people from all walks of life, doing all sorts of things all melting into a beautiful, vibrant city that is absolutely buzzing with activity.

2. Affordable Living

Granted, rent has risen sharply in the last ten years in Barcelona, but it is still a whole lot lower than say New York City, London, Sydney or Paris. For around €500/month you can share a flat or raise that €750 and you might find yourself a small studio.

Groceries are also affordable in supermarkets and eating out can also be cheap. For as little as €1000 a month you can live a decent life that involves having a good time and meeting interesting people. View more tips how to visit Barcelona on a budget.

3. High Speed Internet

How does fast fiber optic internet sound like? Well, granted not everyone will have that but at the very least you never have to worry if you’re going to be able to watch Netfllix or chat with your family and friends.

Compared to ten years ago, Barcelona has certainly progressed when it comes to internet availability which is now available in most restaurants, cafes and bars. It’s more common to see people working from nice cafes nows, so bring out your laptop, grab a cafe con leche and get working!

4. Coworking Spaces

If cafes are not your thing, then join one of the many coworking spaces popping up all over the city. High speed internet, competitive pricing, free coffee, tea and snacks and access to some cool people as well as interesting workshops and activities. It’s a great way to start meeting people.

5. The Food

I’m not even kidding about this. There is just so much good food to try in Barcelona at prices that are uber affordable. If you’re a foodie, then Barcelona is food heaven. There are so many top rated restaurants in Barcelona and even eating at michelin star establishments won’t break the bank. And menu del dia is a great way to have a three course meal for €10!

6. Nightlife

This might not be your thing, but it might be to someone else (aka me!). I’ve gone past the age where I can guzzle down alcohol and have it all be ok the next day. I need me some quality!

I can’t stress this enough, but booze is cheap in Barcelona. And I’m talking about the good, top shelf stuff. I love being able to buy a good bottle of gin and have friends over for Gin and Tonics and know that I’m guaranteed a great night that won’t break my bank.

7. Day Trips

Taking a day trip up to France will only take 2 hours on a train. Costa Brava, Valencia, Andorra, even Madrid is only 3 hours away on the high speed train. It’s amazing how awesome it is to be able to travel to all these places and not have it carve out too much of your time. Weekends will never be the same.

8. There’s Always Something to Do

From music festivals, to heading out to the beach or attending a workshop on how to be a clown or do pottery, or go skiing, I swear you will never run out of things to occupy your time. Which might make actually working a tad bit tough, but hey, that’s what coworking spaces are for!

You could also use Barcelona as a hub to explore more of Spain, from amazing cities to beautiful beaches and islands, there are so many destinations.

Plan Your Move to Live in Barcelona

I suppose Barcelona ticks a lot of my boxes on what I like in the city – which is why I keep coming back to it! However, I urge you oh fellow digital nomad to check out the city yourself.
