Far too many of us touch down in Dubai and never leave the glistening white walls of the modern terminal building.
If you are planning a gap year to the UAE (whoop!), or even have one booked (double whoop!), and would like to actually experience the highlights of the city, here’s what you should do to make your stay in Dubai extra special.
1. Burj Khalifa
The world’s tallest building is probably worth some attention right? Any first time visit to Dubai must include a trip up to the observation deck of this iconic skyscraper. On route be sure to watch the Dubai Fountain display (best viewed in the evening) for a truly breath-taking (and free) experience. Top tip – book online and go for an off peak time to keep the cost low.
2. Food
We believe that a country with good food, is a country well worth visiting. Dubai is home to some of the most over-the-top and delicious restaurants in the world. For a truly memorable experience be sure to book in for a Friday brunch at one of the lavish 5* hotels. One of the best, the Saffron restaurant at the Atlantis hotel – incredible!
3. Shopping
We all need a bit of retail therapy every once in a while. And where better to indulge then at The Dubai Mall, the largest shopping centre in the world (yes Dubai likes to do everything BIG). Alternatively, for those of you looking for a more traditional and fragrant shopping experience, check out the Spice Souk in the old city of Deira.
4. Skiing/Snowboarding
Yes you can ski in Dubai – pretty cool right? Hit the indoor slopes for a ski or snowboard session, perfect for both beginners and the more experienced snow bunny.
5. Desert Safari
Book yourself on to one of the four-wheeled drive desert safari tours for a fun and bumpy ride. Some trips include a BBQ dinner with entertainment – a hilarious evening which might even get you belly dancing!
6. Sky Dive
How many traveller videos have you seen of people sky diving in Australia or New Zealand? For something a bit different, why not jump out above the only man-made island in the shape of a palm tree in the world? Not a bad view!
7. Beach
The weather in Dubai is great all year round. What more could you want? A lot of the beaches are privately owned by the hotels, but one of the best beaches in Dubai isn’t – head to Al Mamzar for an afternoon of relaxation!
