1. Choose your destinations carefully

Try to mix your trip up and challenge yourself, don’t be put off by different cultures, languages and foods.
Consider if you prefer cities, beaches or countryside – or do all!
2. Be open to meet people along the way
If you don’t have anyone to go with there are so many reasons to travel solo.
Even if you’re traveling solo, you should not limit yourself to being alone while you travel.
The world is a big place, and you can meet people interested in sharing a meal and a story with you. For people that are single and traveling, you can even meet a romantic partner that will spice up your golden years!
You can also try alternative methods of meeting new people in various cities. Traveling solo gives you a lot of opportunities to find love on the road, you could try to meet single mature women or men in your destination.
However, you also shouldn’t limit yourself to meeting new acquaintances on the beach or at the bar. Try an online dating service, and you could find yourself involved with a simmering romance!
3. Don’t be afraid of hostels
Most seniors aren’t going to make a mad dash to stay in hostels due to thinking they are only for ‘young’ people. But this is wrong, hostels are a great way to meet other people from around the world of all ages.

4. Take advantage of senior discounts
Some airlines, buses, cabs, and other services offer senior discounts. Why not seek them out and take advantage of what they have to offer? You can use money saved towards fun activities.
5. Take medicine and medical documents just in case
If you are reliant upon certain medications, take them with you. Also, take along some online backups of medical documentation to prove you use those scripts. You never know when you’ll need quick access to a refill.
6. Think about your personal safety while traveling

7. Check in with your family often
At least once a day, call someone back home and let them know what you’re up to and where you’re at. You can also share your pictures on social media to let them know how you’re doing.
8. Plan activities
There are lots of amazing things to do on a gap year, from sightseeing, volunteering programs, helping animals to exploring jungles, relaxing on beaches or island hopping.
When you travel to certain destinations, like Paris, there are some places like the Eiffel Tower you have to see no matter what.
Even though you have some idea of what you want to see, leave some space for spontaneity. Maybe you met someone online when you landed and want to take them out for a coffee!
9. Travel at the right time of the day
Early morning traveling can be best, but it can be difficult if you’re not used to being up that early. Aim for morning and mid-morning for sightseeing depending on your destination and the weather. Usually in the afternoons crowds are bigger.
10. Look for Arranged Tours or Itinerary-based Travel
You don’t have to be in charge of your entire trip. There are tour groups that will take all your needs into account as well as cruises that take you to many countries around the world without you needing to put in much effort.
